What is Giardiasis?
Agent: Giardia duodenalis (syn. G. intestinalis, G. lamblia)
Clinical Sign & Prevalence:
– Giardia is a diarrhea causing parasitic protozoa found in the small intestine of dogs and cats.
-This pathogen lives attached to the epithelial microvilli of the small intestine and reproduces by binary fission. It is estimated that 5% of the cat and dog population of the world is infected.
– Young puppies tend to be highly infected especially in group breeding. No specific signs in adult dogs and cats, but puppies and kittens could be showing watery or foamy diarrhea with a bad smell.This is due to malabsorption within the intestine.
– This can result in High mortality due to severe acute or continuous diarrhea.
– In addition to young animals, those that are stressed, immunosuppressed, or housed in groups have the greatest prevalence of clinical disease.
Diagnosis:
– Fecal Microscopy : Finding cysts or trophozoites in the feces
– Fecal Immunoassays : Immunochromatography(“Rapid test kit”), ELISA, Direct fluorescent antibody(FA) Duodenal sampling
